Punjab Health Department urges Zila Parishads to address medication shortage by October 9

Following a recent report by Hindustan Times revealing a severe shortage of essential medicines in over 550 rural dispensaries across Punjab, the state's rural development and panchayati raj department has taken swift action. They have issued a letter to additional deputy commissioners (ADCs) cum chief executive officers of zila parishads, urging them to submit their medicine demands by October 9 to alleviate the crisis.

The crisis came to light as the Hindustan Times reported that these dispensaries, which typically serve around 10,000 people each, have been grappling with dwindling supplies. The last delivery of medicines was made three months ago in June, and prior to that, a two-year gap in supplies had left these healthcare centers ill-equipped to treat patients.

Immediate response required

The letter, authored by Minister Parneet Kaur, underscores the urgency of the situation. It mentions that only two districts had responded to previous letters sent on September 8 and 22, emphasizing the need for prompt action. The directive urges all ADCs to raise their medicine demands immediately to expedite the resupply process.

Medical professionals and associations have voiced concerns about the neglect faced by rural dispensaries and called for systemic improvements. They demand that the Panchayati Raj department establish a permanent mechanism to ensure timely medicine supply. Currently, the medicines are procured and supplied by the Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) based on the demands raised by zila parishads, followed by a tendering process that can take several months.

While addressing the immediate crisis is crucial, healthcare advocates emphasize the need for sustained attention to rural healthcare, ensuring that supplies are consistently available to meet the medical needs of rural communities. The call for action seeks to prevent further hardships faced by patients and medical practitioners in these underserved areas.
